Personal Protection In the Home teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense. This is more than a routine shooting course and will run approximately eight to nine hours. Students should expect to shoot approximately 100 rounds of live ammunition. Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and course completion certificate.
NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law, and experienced shooters to maximize what can be learned from this course. Experience being defined as ability to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm. Proof of pre-requisite shooting experience is required and can be one of the following: NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, concealed firearms license, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing the Pre-Course Assessment.
Note:
The Pre-course evaluation is used in lieu of aforementioned pre-requisites to allow prospective students an opportunity to demonstrate they have the necessary qualifications to register for this course, be safe, and comprehend its content. If you do not posses one of the pre-requisites listed, notify me of your intent to register and we will make arrangements to meet at a range where you can demonstrate the required basic skills for safe gun handling, state safety rules, demonstrate loading, setting and unsetting triggers, unloading, shooting groups, zeroing, and cleaning procedures.
For this class you are expected to bring and use the pistol you will keep ready at home for your defense including single action "Cowboy " revolvers if that is what you keep ready at home. This course concentrates on in home defense subject matter. Holsters are allowed, but they will only be used to store unloaded pistols on the range and will not be used for draw since it is unlikely you would be wearing a holster at home or to bed. Suggested ammunition is target grade ammunition for practice since defensive grade ammunition is an unnecessary expense for training purposes. Various shooting positions will be employed in this course including kneeling and running. If you have difficulty with those tasks we can work within your limitations. Please do not bring any live ammunition in to the classroom. All firearms will be inspected upon entry to ensure they are unloaded. Please have them enclosed in some kind of case, preferably with some kind of lock.
This course contains six lessons plus a written exam. Lesson three on Firearms and the Law is taught by a Florida Bar certified attorney with experience in this area.
Finally, here are some recommended items to bring to class with you:
Eye and ear protection - both earplugs and muffs together are quietest,
Pen, pencil, and highlighter,
At least 100 rounds (200 recommended) of target grade ammunition, left in your vehicle during the academic portion of the class,
